Electric surfboards are changing the way people experience the water in Dubai. No waves, no wind, no tow rope – just you, the board and the open water of the Arabian Gulf. At Boards of Emirates we work with these boards every day, so we put together everything you need to know if you’re thinking about buying an electric surfboard in Dubai.

What is an electric surfboard

An electric surfboard – also called a jetboard – is a motorised board powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The motor drives a jet propulsion system that pushes the board forward, allowing you to reach speeds of up to 55 km/h on flat water with no external help.

There are two main types available in the UAE right now.

Jetboards sit on the water surface and give you a direct, physical riding experience. They respond quickly to your movements and feel closest to traditional surfing or wakeboarding. The Awake RÄVIK is the leading example in this category.

eFoils use a hydrofoil system beneath the board to lift the rider completely above the water. Once flying, the sensation is silent and smooth – more like gliding through air than riding on water. The JetWave eFoil is a strong option in this category.

Both types are available through Boards of Emirates for purchase, rental or test ride.

Why Dubai works so well for electric surfboards

Dubai offers near-perfect conditions for this type of riding. The Arabian Gulf coastline is calm and protected, which means flat water most of the year. There are no big swells to deal with and the water temperature stays comfortable for a long riding season.

The backdrop helps too. Riding past the Dubai Marina skyline or out near the Palm Jumeirah makes every session feel different to anywhere else in the world.

Awake electric surfboards – our experience

Awake is a Swedish brand and one of the most respected names in the jetboard category. Their boards are built from carbon fibre and designed to perform seriously on the water.

RÄVIK Explore – the easiest Awake to learn on

The RÄVIK Explore is the most beginner-friendly board in the Awake lineup. The wider, more stable shape means first-time riders can focus on balance and throttle control without fighting the board underneath them. The new hand controller connects automatically and gives you real-time feedback on speed and battery level.

Battery weight has also been reduced significantly in the latest generation – the LR 4 and XR 4 packs are up to 8 kg lighter than before, which makes a real difference when you’re carrying the board to the water.

Despite being designed for beginners, the RÄVIK Explore still has more than enough performance for experienced riders who want a reliable, no-fuss session.

BRABUS x Awake Shadow – limited to 77 units worldwide

If you want something truly exclusive, the BRABUS x Awake Shadow is in a different category entirely. The collaboration between Awake and BRABUS produced a board with signature stealth design and top-tier electric surf performance. Only 77 units were produced globally. It is available in the UAE through Boards of Emirates.

JetWave eFoil – flying above the water

For riders who want to experience what it actually feels like to fly above the surface, the JetWave eFoil is worth serious attention. The full carbon construction keeps the board light and responsive, while the motor system delivers smooth, controllable power from the moment you start moving.

The lift-off process feels more natural than many people expect. Within a few sessions most riders find a consistent flying height and start to explore turns and speed variations. The ride is almost completely silent, which changes the experience entirely compared to a jetboard.

JetWave offers both high-performance carbon models and more accessible Air versions, so there is an entry point for different riders and budgets.
